S1 NO.1 STYLE
Founded: 2004
‘I’m Glad I Got to See You Again, Looking So Beautiful. Thank You, Truly.’
The product description ends on these two sentences.
“In this title she takes on things none of her past work had — moves where she takes the lead against a man, and POV filming. I’m glad I got to see you again, looking so beautiful. Thank you, truly.”
(FANZA product description, retrieved August 2026)
July 2021, the title marking Ayaka Kawakita’s (河北彩花) return after three years away. Its title: “Ayaka Kawakita: Re:start!”
Two things she had never filmed before sit inside its 170 minutes. Taking the lead against a man. Holding the camera themselves. Someone who had always been filmed as the one things were done to stands, for the first time, as the one reaching out. The description calls that change “more forward and assertive than before,” and then closes by saying thank you.
What happened across those three years isn’t written down. What is written is only that the face of the person who came back had changed, and how the side that saw it felt about that.
The sample video opens in a bright room. A room with a white fireplace and a red chair, her long hair down, a patterned blouse on, laughing. The stretch of time where the person who came back after three years is still dressed.
From there it shifts to a room with brick walls. String lights hang down the wall, blue light circling across the floor. She is on top; her partner lies on his back, looking up. That posture is what the description meant by taking the lead.
2,735 reviews — the most of any title in S1’s 6,936-title catalog. Directed by Kyosei (キョウセイ). A description that ends like a letter is also the most-read description on the shelf.
She went on to become one of S1’s flagship stars, later changed her name to Saika Kawakita (河北彩伽), and her name still appears on the release line today. Saika Kawakita’s career is covered in its own article.
This piece of writing is about someone who came back. So how is the beginning itself written?
On Launch Day, Eight Debuted at Once
November 11, 2004. S1’s first eight distributed titles each had a different lead performer.
Alice Ogura (小倉ありす), Ruka Ogawa (小川流果), MEW, Mami Hayasaki (早咲まみ), Natsuya Yonekura (米倉夏弥), Chihiro Hara (原千尋), Kanan Kawai (かわい果南), Misato Shiraishi (白石みさと). Six of the eight titles start with the word “Rookie” (新人): “Rookie: Mami Hayasaki.” “Rookie: Kanan Kawai, Cosmic Beautiful Girl.” “Rookie × Semen: Chihiro Hara.”
The following month, December 11, brought another eight. Released together on the same day, with another eight the month after that. The label has run this way since it launched.
Twenty years have passed. The catalog has grown to 6,936 titles, adding roughly 500 a year. Release dates land several times a month, and each date carries a dozen-plus titles at once. The shelf splits broadly into two: flat-format titles run on one track, headset titles on another.
The label’s own description of itself is consistent across the official site’s footer and its X bio.
“Japan’s premier maker of solo AV — S1.”
(S1 NO.1 STYLE official site / official X, retrieved May 2026)
That account carries 354,000 followers and a cumulative 81,000 posts, active since September 2010.
It’s a declaration that solo titles — releases with exactly one performer — are the core business. The content isn’t limited to the mainstream, though. Alongside big breasts, beautiful-girl types, and slender builds sitting at the center, aggressive-woman pieces, NTR, and hardcore projects that pound a performer past the point of consciousness sit on the same shelf.
Pricing shows a real gap. A brand-new title runs 3,380 yen for the 4K version, 2,680 for HD. Once a little time passes, that drops to 2,380 for 4K and 1,680 for HD, with streaming at 500. Compilations and older titles fall further, to 1,180 for HD and into the 300-yen range for streaming. Within the same maker’s shelf, new and old titles differ in price by roughly tenfold. Where someone enters the catalog changes how much they end up spending, by a wide margin.
None of the eight names on that 2004 lineup show up on the current release line. Even so, a title in the exact same shape keeps coming out, more than ten times a year, every year.
‘Hello, Nice to Meet You. I’m Iroha Hakata. I’m 20. I’m a College Student.’
The description opens with her own introduction.
“Hello, nice to meet you. I’m Iroha Hakata (博多彩葉). I’m 20. I’m a college student. The moment I first saw her, I was certain. This is… a true find. Under that neat baby face was hidden an I-cup, stretched taut in a way that didn’t match her cute-girl features at all. (omitted) That kind of classic, currently-hot gravure idol is now an S1 exclusive. AV unlocked. Wielding a pure, innocent look and a body with devastating impact, why did she choose AV?”
(FANZA product description, retrieved August 2026)
20 years old. A college student. Those are the only two things she states about herself — everything after that gets taken over by the writer.
Streamed April 2026. 165 minutes. Nine behind-the-scenes stills have been made public. After she finishes introducing herself, what comes first is the stretch that runs until her clothes come off. It’s a title shot on the day someone who had shown as much as a swimsuit moves past that point.
Judging only by her face, it’s a baby face — what’s underneath stays unknown until she undresses. Her name and age get stated first, with that still unknown, and the confirmation comes after. When the description writes “the moment I first saw her, I was certain,” that’s the crew’s account. The viewer hasn’t seen anything yet.
The description poses the question of why she chose AV, but doesn’t answer it.
Play the sample and nobody appears for a while. A promenade under a cloudy sky, a single palm tree, a seaside town shot from above. Skin wet and shining in a light-blue patterned bikini, and her face arrives only after that. A black bob with the bangs cut straight, a small mole on her left cheek. Toward the end it turns to night, and she’s laughing in a white floral dress, holding a sparkler.
What gravure work has always shot sits there, a little under two minutes of it. The 165 minutes past that open only for whoever buys.
86 reviews — still a small number, four months after release. Favorites, though, sit at 54,813 (as of August 2026). People holding it in reserve outnumber people who’ve written that they watched it, by an order of magnitude.
A Debut Title’s Name Always Carries a Résumé Line
Since the start of 2026, S1 has released debut titles from nine new performers.
- February — Mikuru Hinagata (雛形みくる): “A Baby Face, an I-Cup, and a Waist That’s Secretly Absurd, at 170cm Tall”
- March — Nozomi Suzuki (鈴木希): “The Talk-of-the-Town, Wonderfully Ordinary Older Sister”
- March — Kanon Hayasaka (早坂奏音): “A Miraculously Untouched Body, a Sacred, Unfinished Girl”
- April — Iroha Hakata (博多彩葉): “Visuals That Explode! A New-Era Gravure Idol”
- April — Nia Shirahana (白花にあ): “‘Why I’m Becoming an AV Actress_’”
- May — Towa Shiraishi (白石透羽): “A Phantom Hakata Idol Hopeful”
- June — Rion Sono (園梨音): “Swimming and Nothing Else, an Innocent-Hearted Older Sister”
- June — Konoha Mitsu (蜜このは): “One-of-a-Kind at 20, a College Student from Kyoto”
- July — Neru Hoshizora (星空ねる): “Fresh Graduate, New Face”
Swimming and nothing else. A Hakata idol hopeful. A college student from Kyoto. A wonderfully ordinary older sister. Ahead of the name comes what that person used to be. Explain who she is first, then sell the moment she undresses.
Sometimes that line is missing. Nia Shirahana’s title ends on her own question, and Mikuru Hinagata’s gets by on a body description alone. Five of the eight carry a previous-life résumé line; the remaining three are filled in with a question, a body, or a turn of phrase.
This format settled into place in 2014. Back then the lineup ran “Exclusive NO.1 STYLE: [name], S1 debut,” and Kurenai Ito (伊東紅) came out in that shape. Since then, the naming convention has shifted little by little while the same slot keeps turning.
This series has now passed 200 titles in total. 157 of those carry the words “AV Debut” in the title.
From 2019 through 2026, it’s never dropped below ten a year. Just under one person a month, someone nobody’s heard of yet, keeps getting sent out.
The résumé line is always pulled from her life before undressing. The swimmer keeps swimming, and the college student stays enrolled. The next title gets shot with the place she used to belong left sitting in the title.
The one that pulled the biggest crowd with this format was a January 2025 title.
‘Was “Once in a Thousand Years” Really an Exaggeration?’
The description ends by asking a question instead of making a claim.
“The strongest heroine, Kanna Seto (瀬戸環奈), age 20, height 170cm, bust 101cm, J-cup. A rising gravure idol with a spec-sheet body finally shows herself with nothing on. Full nudity, unlocked. A star always appears out of nowhere, no matter the era. (omitted) Was ‘once in a thousand years’ really an exaggeration? We want you to watch and decide for yourself. AV has hit a turning point. The strongest heroine, marking that milestone.”
(FANZA product description, retrieved August 2026)
After writing that she shows herself with nothing on, that full nudity gets unlocked, the description hands the verdict over to whoever’s reading it.
170cm. A 101cm bust. What she wore in gravure work is gone at the start of these 147 minutes.
A height of 170cm changes where the eye goes when standing side by side — not someone looked up at, but someone met at eye level. With that eye level already matched, the J-cup figure comes on top of it. The scene the description calls “full nudity, unlocked” is partly visible before buying.
Favorites: 176,714 (as of August 2026) — a standout number even within S1’s catalog. Reviews sit at 1,781 too, also far ahead of any other debut title. Directed by Mametaro Mamezawa (豆沢豆太郎). Lining up four figures and then asking back “wasn’t that an exaggeration?” is the writing of someone who knows the numbers alone aren’t enough. Kanna Seto’s career is covered in its own article.
Her Second Title Was All ‘First Times’ Too
Two months after her debut, the same performer’s second title came out. Its title: “The Strongest Heroine’s First AV Experience, 3 Scenes.”
The description numbers off what’s inside.
“That strongest-tier material experiences pleasure for the first time in her life! 1. Breasts bouncing hard [sweat-soaked cowgirl sex]. 2. Gorgeous body shaking and convulsing [bound toy torment]. 3. Licking and being licked all over [dense sex with an older man]. 4. Her first-ever [footjob to climax] with those long, long legs. 5. Spit and oil, [slick titjob]. 6. Driven wild by being worked from top and bottom at once [her first-ever 3P].”
(FANZA product description, retrieved August 2026)
All six are first times. Riding on top and bouncing, being tied up and pressed with a toy, holding him with her legs, holding him with her chest, being taken by two people at once.
Someone for whom undressing itself was the first time in her debut works through the acts one at a time, two months later. The clothes come off in the first title; the content fills in on the second. It runs 197 minutes, and the six numbered headings become six literal segments.
The same sales format is set up for other performers too. There’s a series called “First Experience, X Scenes Special,” and Natsu Natsuki’s (夏生なつ) second title, from January 2026, falls into it as well. Its description closes by turning the question on her directly: “Natsu, is this really your first time…?”
A first time doesn’t end with one title. It isn’t sold off in full at the debut — half of it is held back for the next one. This second title has 911 reviews. Together with the debut’s 1,781, one person occupies two of the four most-reviewed titles in S1’s catalog. Favorites: 83,208 (as of August 2026).
’Would You Consider Doing AV Again?’
This time, it’s the label doing the inviting.
“It was really only supposed to be a one-title deal… But we wanted to shoot her again, no matter what. ‘Would you consider doing AV again?’ About two months after her hugely successful MUTEKI release… that stunning gravure body, polished even further… gravure talent ‘Kiho Kanematsu’ (金松季歩) descends onto S1, in full force!”
(FANZA product description, retrieved August 2026)
Someone who was only ever meant to shoot one title gets called back, two months later.
This is a “first” that isn’t a debut. The path where someone who shot one title for another company gets invited into an S1 exclusive contract. Streamed July 2024, 168 minutes, 3 scenes.
Someone who considered it finished changes her mind within two months. A body that, had the original promise held, would never have been filmed again stands in front of the camera a second time. “Polished even further,” the description says. What changed in two months is less the body than the range of what she’s willing to be filmed doing.
The sample video opens in a bedroom. A wood-panelled room with white light coming through the window, standing with her legs apart, a finger hooked on the strap at her chest. Someone who undressed having decided it was a one-time thing stood in this spot again two months later.
Then the screen goes black for a moment, with one line left on it — but we wanted to shoot her again, no matter what.
Cherry blossoms come last. In front of the blurred flowers, she turns to the side in a white coat and looks up at the sky, her mouth open. Text comes up: Exclusive NO.1 STYLE, Kiho Kanematsu, S1 DEBUT.
The same person who shot the title of the performer returning after three years shot this one too. Directed by Kyosei (キョウセイ).
397 reviews, averaging 4.68. The second title from someone who thought there’d only ever be one gets received at that rating. Favorites: 31,703 (as of August 2026).
The VR Title That Opens With ‘Do You Know Her?’
Some descriptions start by asking the reader directly whether they know her.
“T170cm B99cm W58cm H88cm — do you know the woman named Rie Yamate (山手梨愛), a true find of a gravure idol with a body on a completely different scale? Experience her overwhelming presence and industry No.1 perfect body in immersive VR footage. That alone should be enough to make you feel glad to have been born in this era!”
(FANZA product description, retrieved August 2026)
Four figures get lined up, and then comes the question of whether the reader already knows her. Anyone who doesn’t is told to put the headset on and find out. That’s the order it’s written in.
A shelf that exists only on the headset side runs on its own track, separate from flat-format work. The series is called “VR NO.1 STYLE.” The operating pattern has an exclusive performer shoot several flat-format titles first, then move into this lane, with the word “unlocked” attached to the title. February 2026 brought Rui Shido’s (紫堂るい) first VR title, built around a tutoring job she has actually held herself, its description inviting: “Want to get a little dirty with Rui Shido in the world of VR?” Here too, it speaks directly.
This shelf isn’t new. A Miru Sakamichi (坂道みる) title from November 2020 is still picking up reviews today. The volume is smaller than flat-format work, but the design built around wearing a headset had already settled by then.
The same performer sometimes appears on both shelves on the same day, but the construction differs. Because it’s built on the premise that the other person is within arm’s reach, even the camera placement changes from flat-format work.
This title has no sample video. In its place, the product page carries twelve stills — two more than the other cards here. Several of them are shot at a distance where her face fills the frame. It’s 103 minutes with someone measuring 170cm, B99, W58, H88 sitting at that distance.
Favorites: 22,812 (as of August 2026). VR is a shelf that doesn’t easily attract reviews, but this is the count of people keeping it in reserve. Directed by Koala Tarō (wa) (こあら太郎(わ)).
Once the Name Sells, It Becomes a Story About the Room Next Door
A title for someone being filmed for the first time begins with someone from outside making the introduction. Naming, inviting, asking, thanking. The five titles quoted so far were all built that way.
Once the name is known, the way in changes.
“When I moved in, a really beautiful older woman turned out to be living in the next room. Stylish, sparkling, and somehow familiar… oh! That’s it! She’s that beauty influencer who keeps showing up on social media!! (omitted) ‘I can’t get this place organized… what do I do…’ ‘Want some help cleaning up, then?’”
(FANZA product description, retrieved August 2026)
Streamed November 2025, a title starring Aika Yumeno (夢乃あいか). The one narrating is the man who’s just moved in next door, and he’s found his own excuse to go tidy her room. The writer isn’t anywhere in this. A character inside the story is speaking from inside the story.
The same shape shows up in other titles too. In a January 2026 title starring Niko Kawagoe (川越にこ), the narrator is a younger sister.
“In place of Mom, a hot-spring trip with my big sister and her boyfriend!!! Sis’s boyfriend is exactly Niko’s type… In that case… Sis, I’m really sorry. Niko’s going to take him.”
(FANZA product description, retrieved August 2026)
She declares she’s going to take him right after apologizing to her sister. The line isn’t addressed to the reader — it’s addressed to the sister.
A February 2025 title starring Nanoha Mizuno (水乃なのは) is narrated by the man in the affair. The line “Today, you’re mine and mine alone…” comes first, and only after that does “we’re having an affair” follow. She says herself it’s a relationship she can’t tell anyone about, and counts off, one by one, everything the wife doesn’t have.
The moment there’s no longer any need to make an introduction, the outside voice disappears. From there, only the people inside the room carry it forward.
Some titles have the actress narrate as herself. A December 2025 title starring Rui Shido (紫堂るい) opens like this.
“Working as a gravure idol, today again I’m heading into a weekly-magazine shoot for work. (omitted) If I get the chance, I’d love to have that kind assistant hold me…”
(FANZA product description, retrieved August 2026)
Someone who actually moved over from gravure work plays a role that’s still on a gravure set. Her real background is used as the premise itself, and she speaks from inside it in the first person.
Line up the titles from the same stretch of time and the range of situations comes out. A wife who has to live with her husband’s parents after his job transfer visits her father-in-law’s room at night. A department staffed entirely by women, working in swimsuits, brings in a new hire. A brother-and-sister relationship dies a little more each time, with the line that it feels good precisely because they aren’t blood-related. A tutor teaches something other than exam prep. Saki Okuda (奥田咲), Aika Yumeno (夢乃あいか), Kiku Araki (新木希空), miru. Within two years, this whole range comes off the same shelf. In every one of them, the position of the person walking in is fixed within the first few lines.
There Are Six Flagship Series
The official site lists six, each with a different role.
- Shinjin NO.1 STYLE — The debut slot. Has never dropped below ten titles a year
- Exchanged Body Fluids, Dense Sex — A long-running concept dating back to the June 2013 Yua Kuramochi (倉持結愛) version. A Saika Kawakita (河北彩花) version followed in 2021, and a “Shin: Exchanged Body Fluids” Riri Nanatsumori (七ツ森りり) version in 2022. It’s been updated under the same title for over a decade
- Sudden Plunge! Unprecedented Prank AV Operation — A concept that drops a male performer into the gaps of everyday life. Yua Mikami’s (三上悠亜) 2022 title explains its own reasoning: “precisely because she’s a multi-active superstar — gravure shoots, magazine interviews, TV appearances — we want to see her ‘raw’ side”
- S1 Fan Appreciation Festival — A slot that pulls the viewer into the shoot itself
- S1 VR — The headset-side shelf
- S1 GIRLS COLLECTION — Compilations
Among these, the Fan Appreciation Festival is easiest to see in an April 2026 title starring Yuka Murakami (村上悠華). Her debut title was a bus-guide piece. Wearing that same tour-guide uniform again, she now guides actual fans on a one-night, two-day bus tour. The debut title’s premise gets carried out into reality, fans and all.
The push to bring the viewer into the work itself went further once 2026 began. “S1 General Election 2026,” which turns concepts chosen by SNS vote into actual titles, has been assembled at a scale of 27 performers.
Beginnings Piled Up Into Twenty Years
2004 to 2008. It began by bundling “rookies,” and hardcore projects were already running in the same period. The Mei Iwasa (岩佐めい) title from August 2007 reads “driven to the edge of blacking out from furious reverse-cowgirl thrusting”; the Rika Aiuchi (相内リカ) title from July 2008 reads “sent into ecstasy over and over by her first horse-hung cock.” Within a few years of founding, the two wheels of mainstream and concept work were already turning. Both titles still carry a 5-star rating today. An 18-year-old shelf, still in motion.
2014. The debut-title format settles into its fixed shape. That same June, Hana Haruna (春菜はな) got pulled into a popular concept series; that November, Kurenai Ito (伊東紅) came out in “Exclusive NO.1 STYLE: Kurenai Ito, S1 Debut.” By this point, both the slot for sending out rookies and the slot for putting existing performers into concept work were running.
Once a performer becomes a flagship, the concepts change around her. The reason the prank series gave for its Yua Mikami title — wanting to see her unguarded — only works on someone whose guarded self is already widely known. For performers past the stage of getting their name remembered, what gets prepared is a concept that dismantles the image they earned.
November 2024. The 20th anniversary. The distributor’s press release announced the commemorative project like this.
“Release schedule: co-starring titles releasing for seven consecutive months, through June of next year.”
First installment: “S1 PRECIOUS GIRLS 2024 — All-Star, 24-Performer Mass Gathering, Harem Island Special.”
(Digital Commerce Co., Ltd. press release, November 12, 2024)
24 performers gathered for the first installment. Not a celebratory event so much as a show that puts the depth of the roster on display directly. The format of gathering an all-star cast into one title had already been established by May 2022, when it ran 24 performers across 48 segments over 8 hours. The 20th anniversary means that same scale, sustained for seven straight months.
In the heading on its official site, the label names itself another way.
“The AV maker exclusively for S-class actresses.”
(S1 NO.1 STYLE official site, retrieved May 2026)
The actress index page lists 401 names, including everyone across the label’s history. In the same phrasing the 2021 description used for Ayaka Kawakita (河北彩花) — that she appeared like a comet three years ago — 401 separate appearances have piled up.
The People Being Filmed for Their First Time Right Now
On August 21, 2026, S1 distributes more than 14 titles on the same day. Solo titles and compilations are mixed in together, so the number of performers is smaller than the number of titles.
Neru Hoshizora (星空ねる), Kanon Hayasaka (早坂奏音), Saika Kawakita (河北彩伽), Riri Nanatsumori (七ツ森りり), Sakika Shirakami (白上咲花), Kokoro Asano (浅野こころ), Nanami Kodama (兒玉七海), Aika Yumeno (夢乃あいか), Moe Sakakibara (榊原萌). A role training as a new graduate hire, a sex-work experience, a gal nursing a feverish boyfriend. Line them up and it’s no different from November 11, 2004. Multiple people still come out together on the same day.
Count two months of releases and pre-orders and the number of names climbs to 37. Rather than leaning on a single ace, running each performer’s own lane in parallel is the substance behind twenty years of underlying strength.
Titles in this exact shape are still lined up across the shelf, plenty of them.
- Akari Arisu’s (有栖花あか) debut title (October 2020, 1,235 reviews). She now works under the name Ushio (汐世) — this is the first title from before the name change
- Rie Yamate’s (山手梨愛) debut title (November 2021, 696 reviews). Her first flat-format title, half a year before her VR unlock
- A three-company joint best (April 2025, 481 minutes). A compilation bringing S1, MOODYZ, and Idea Pocket together into one title — one of the rare chances to watch it alongside other labels’ flagship names
How to buy splits along a line. VR and a debut title fresh off release both have to be bought individually as downloads. On the other hand, digging into twenty years of back catalog from the older end is faster through a monthly unlimited-viewing plan. Buy 2007 and 2008 titles one at a time and even 300-yen titles pile up.
Separate from following beginnings, there’s also a slot that folds the years after the start into a single title.
Folding Four Years Into One Title
“Eros awakening, aggressive woman, female teacher, gang assault, sponsor dating, school swimsuit, soapland, NTR and more — the latest 12 titles drawing out new sides of Yua Mikami (三上悠亜).”
(FANZA product description, retrieved August 2026)
Eight genre names, lined up in a row.
Four years of work from her debut onward, gathered from 12 titles into 477 minutes. 72 segments. She plays a teacher, does sponsor dating, wears a school swimsuit, gets taken from her partner. A record of every role the same person passed through over four years plays out in sequence.
This slot isn’t only for someone in her fourth year, either. The first best compilation comes out a year after debut. Niko Kawagoe’s (川越にこ) first best, released April 2025, has a description reading “You can still become a longtime fan starting now — catch up with this first-best title and you’ll make it in time! A year’s worth of memories with Niko Kawagoe,” and Miyu Aizawa’s (逢沢みゆ) first best, released the month before, opens with “One year since a real idol’s AV debut” and “starting from a real idol’s first undressing and first penetration.” Even a compilation’s sales pitch starts from the beginning.
It works out to a changeover roughly every six minutes per segment.
Play the sample and that speed comes through directly. From a scene on a hotel-style white bed where her pink bra is pulled aside and she throws her arms above her head, laughing, to a scene under a bare bulb where she’s covered in sweat with her brows drawn together — under a minute apart. The hair color, the room, the expression all differ. The same eyes and the same face, with only the position swapping out.
Instead of buying one at a time and following along for four years, it’s a way of taking that swapping in one continuous stretch.
564 reviews, averaging 4.24. This slot continues as a standing series called S1 GIRLS COLLECTION, where anniversary bests and retirement complete-boxes alike line up. The full series is covered in S1 GIRLS COLLECTION. The box for Ai Hongo (本郷愛), who retired in December 2025, also came out of this slot.
Who This Fits
- Anyone who hasn’t decided where to start: Starting from a debut title is the hardest way to go wrong. The résumé line built into the title reveals who she is without reading anything further
- Anyone who likes video shot close: There’s a separate shelf on the headset side. There are more stills than flat-format titles carry. Since exclusives “unlock” VR only after several 2D titles, it’s possible to know the face before putting the headset on
- Anyone who wants to follow one performer straight through: Anniversary bests come out in 477-minute units. Rather than stacking up individual titles first, one release covers several years of a single performer
- Anyone who wants to dig into the old shelf: 2007 and 2008 titles still carry a 5-star rating today. Older titles drop into the 300-yen range, but buying them one at a time piles up, so a monthly unlimited-viewing plan fits better
Summary
Across a shelf of six thousand nine hundred titles, the one that pulls the biggest crowd is the one where she undresses for the first time.
From the day eight performers came out at once on November 11, 2004, S1 has kept repeating the same shape. Explain who she is through the title, film the first-time moment, get the name remembered. That shape settled into place in 2014, and the same slot has kept turning ever since.
In that very first title, the writer of the description speaks directly to the reader. The text that has her introduce herself, the text that invites her to appear one more time, the text that says thank you, truly — all of it is right there.
Once the name sells, that voice disappears. In its place, a man who’s just moved in next door, or a younger sister taking her sister’s boyfriend, starts speaking from inside the story.
Even in the pre-order line right now, names nobody knows yet are mixed in. In a few months that person’s first title will come out, and someone else will start again from a self-introduction.
